    Wednesday Wisdom: Get out There

    Wednesday Wisdom: Get out There

Cape House | Home and Hospitality | Amelia Island Florida It's safe to say things are getting a little crazy around here. The store buildout is SLOWLY (but surely) coming to an end, inventory is arriving daily, lots of little (but oh so important) details are being hammered out, AND our best friends/business partners (the Jones) are moving this week. No big deal... With a long list of to-dos, it is easy to get caught up in the minutia of launching and miss the big picture. Although owning a retail store has been a long-held dream of mine, the actual reality of Cape House hasn't been around long; it went from dream to 5-year plan, concept to conversation, and decision to reality almost overnight! After prayerfully moving full steam ahead, I really never stopped to think about the "what ifs". Last week, as we sorted through boxes (that are literally stacked to the ceiling in my garage), an overwhelming sense of reality hit me. Holy moly - what if we fail? What if no one loves this product as much as we do? What if it doesn't work? What will people think? What would that even look like? How would it affect our friendship and marriages? I shook off the feeling and kept to my to do list, focusing instead on the check mark at the end of each task (and I live for checkmarks)! A couple of nights later, while the Jones were preparing their new (old family) home to move in this week and Wes was once again bound to the store with endless amounts of trim work, I took Hannah Grace and Addi Grace to see Cars 3 (because sometimes you just need popcorn). I wrangled them through the parking lot in the rain, bought tickets, popcorn & drinks, and found our seats with blankets and toy dinosaurs in hand, ready for two hours of mindless entertainment - think again! A few minutes into the movie, to motivate the infamous Lightning McQueen to continue chasing his dream, his trainer, Cruz Ramirez, says "Don't fear failure. Be afraid of not having the chance, you have the chance!" I grabbed my phone to record this truth and spent the remaining 1 hour 45 minutes reflecting on this season. As I look back over the past 6 months, I realized that my lack of attention to the possibility of failure is in fact, faith - a confidence that God will complete what He has started, and He will get the glory one way or another! I am so thankful we did not let the fear of failure get in the way of taking the chance! Yes, it can be scary. Yes, it is a big leap of faith and a big risk, but I would rather my "what if" be "What if we fail now?" than look back in 20 years and ask, "What if we would have tried?" Is there something that you are waiting to do but have been afraid of failure? Get out there, and take the chance! “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:1‬ ‭NIV Cape House | Home and Hospitality | Amelia Island Florida

    Meet the Founders: Wes

    Meet the Founders: Wes

Cape House | Home and Hospitality | Amelia Island Florida You love them. You really love them (and so do we)! Your supportive response to our first two Meet the Founders posts gives us #allthefeels, and we're excited to keep this train going with our third founder: Wes Hinton, Tiffany's husband. Never met him, but seem familiar? Probably because he's Lance's less vocal counterpart on those late-night store build out Instastories. Now's the time to formally introduce him below:

    ON CAPE HOUSE…

What's your role at Cape House? "You know, the typical position of bookkeeper, build out supervisor, and day (night) laborer. The beautiful thing about entrepreneurship is we all get to wear a different hat every day based on the need." What’s your vision for Cape House? "I’m a terrible visionary. My strength is taking an end goal and figuring out how to get there. With that said, after witnessing a mentor do the same thing, I’ve had this desire to build a company that financially fuels our ministry-related giving. In a nutshell, to use a business for Kingdom work."

    KEEPING IT LIGHT…

Last three photos on your phone? "My jeep with 16’ trim boards tied to the top of it; a selfie montage from my daughter Hannah Grace; and a screenshot of (yet another) tool I needed for the build out." Most recent read? Favorite book? "If by 'read' you mean 'listened to' it was A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. I log a lot of windshield time to-and-from-and-all-around Jacksonville for work, so I’m one of Audible.com’s favorite customers! My favorite book is the one that really showed me what living out authentic Faith looked like: If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat by John Ortberg." Who would play you in a movie of your life? "A chubbier Vince Vaughn - and it would most definitely be a comedic action flick, if such a thing exists." Favorite sandwich? "All of them, unless it has a pickle on it. If you make me pick one, it would be the pimento cheese sandwich served at Augusta National Golf Club." Favorite room in your home? "When you marry an interior designer, you pretty much give up dominion of your home. My things are relegated to the garage, but even that has had Cape House inventory stocked in it for months! I’m hoping for a man-cave one day, but I’m not holding my breath. Ha!" Favorite season? "I love the first week of April. Things are starting to green up, it’s Masters week, opening day of baseball season, my wedding anniversary, and it’s always close to Easter." Favorite holiday? "I’m not a huge holiday person, but I’d probably pick Easter. The resurrection of Jesus Christ frames everything I do, so it’s a great time to reflect on how that event gives me purpose. It’s also kind of like the Super Bowl for churches, and I love seeing people come to Christ for the first time or meet Him in a way that’s new and different."

    LET’S DIG A LITTLE DEEPER…

What trait do you like the most about yourself? "The ability to see a goal and draw the line, regardless of how circuitous, to get there." What trait has gotten you in the most trouble? "I’ve been told I can be too…(ahem)…direct. My inability to sugarcoat things has probably caused some unneeded strife." What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received? "'I trust you' from my wife." What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? "I had a mentor share a quote from CS Lewis that says 'Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.' From a guy who treated my relationship with God as moderately important, it drove home the fact that being a Christ follower can’t be just another trait or activity in my life. It’s either THE driving factor in all decisions, or it’s nothing." What do you love about being a part of your family? "The unconditional love. The older I get, the more broken I realize I am. I think that’s part of God’s sanctification in my life. The more flawed I realize I am, the more I appreciate the love showered on me by my Creator and by my family." While Wes'll maintain his full-time job when Cape House opens, you'll be sure to run into him in-store here and there. Don't hesitate to say hello - and ask him about his unfortunate run-in with a nail gun during buildout. (As the family saying goes, 'It's not a Hinton project unless somebody bleeds!") Last, but not least, next week, we're introducing you to Lance's wife, Lauren, or as he likes to call her, "Bob."

    Waffles with Dad

    Waffles with Dad

Cape House | Home and Hospitality | Amelia Island Florida Sure, it's fun to spoil Dad with cool gifts on Father's Day. But, we guarantee, he'd be just as happy (if not more) with some quality time spent making breakfast together. Don't mind the mess, just soak in the memories creating and sharing a meal together. Tiffany's dad, known to us as GP (a name bestowed by the first grandchild in the family, Hannah Grace), is an excellent cook. In fact, we lovingly refer to his kitchen as GP's Café; he's always whipping up something that we're willing (and eager) to test. His favorite meal is also our favorite to try: brunch. Room for sweet flavors as well as savory, we're always excited to see what's on the menu. This weekend, try his favorite waffle recipe, adapted from America's Test Kitchen. On top of being super easy, it uses buttermilk powder (an exciting ingredient for GP, a chemical engineer), which is found in most grocery stores and actually keeps in the refrigerator for up to a year. That means these waffles will be easy to create again and again - without wasting quick-spoiling buttermilk. See the full recipe below (then tell us how they turn out!)

Wednesday Wisdom: We Receive Your Rain

Wednesday Wisdom: We Receive Your Rain

Cape House | Home and Hospitality | Amelia Island Florida Have you ever had one of those mornings - when it feels like the day starts in the wrong direction and quickly begins spiraling out of control? It’s like watching an alpine skier get the tip of his or her ski caught in a gate and then crash down the mountain hopelessly. Last week I had one of those mornings. The previous night our daughter, Addi Grace, had her first accident in her car seat on the way home. At three years old, we thought we had this all squared away. When we have to go potty, we let someone know. Nope. Not this time. No notice. No warning. She had to pee. So, she did. When we asked why she didn’t tell us she had to go to the bathroom she simply said, “it was an accident. I’m sorry.” While super cute, it still doesn’t minimize the fact that we had to clean up pee and take a bath after midnight. So we removed the car seat cover, washed it and laid it on the counter to dry overnight. In the meantime, my wife and I decided we were swapping cars the next morning because of a few projects I needed to get done at the store. In the process of moving things between the vehicles, I managed to leave the back door open in my car. At 6:30am the next morning it started to rain (and by rain, I mean downpour), which meant Max & Lola (our miniature Yorkies) would not go outside and made a mess in the bathroom. In the process of cleaning it up, our daughter woke up from the storm, scared, and could not be consoled. My wife, Lauren, was running late and trying to figure out where I moved everything from the night before… In my attempt to get everything in its proper place, I realized my car door was open, the backseat holding a couple of inches of water. So, I removed Addi’s car seat to let it dry, grabbed towels to soak up the flood, and switched everything back to its original vehicle (are you tired yet)? Several minutes later, my wife was out the door. In our flurry of frustration, the day didn’t start in the right direction. I could feel my blood pressure elevated as I was physically affected by the tension and circumstance. But my direction changed in an instant when I looked out the back window. The grey skies from the morning storm were split open by a subtle blue streak of sky. It wasn’t there for long, but long enough to remind me that God delivers us from distress when we call out to him. He stills the storms and guides us (Psalm 107:28-31). I paused for a minute, laughed about the events that had transpired over the past 30 minutes, and decided there was plenty of day left for more blue skies. Ironically, rain was in the forecast all day and that afternoon I found myself caught in the middle of more rain as I transferred boxes into the store. I paused for a moment and looked up at the sky. No visible sign of a blue streak, but I knew it was only a matter of time. Cape House | Home and Hospitality | Amelia Island Florida

    Meet the Founders: Lance

    Meet the Founders: Lance

Cape House | Home and Hospitality | Amelia Island Florida_x000D_ _x000D_ Last week on Meet the Founders, we introduced our curator of all-things-pretty, Tiffany (and it's evident you love her just as much as we do!) Next up: Lance Jones. Our very own energizer bunny, Lance is the master of motivation. If you keep up with him on Instastories (@joneslance, if you don't), you've seen him pack his day full of Cape House tasks; loving on his wife, Lauren, and daughter, Addi Grace; and chowing down on his latest culinary creation._x000D_ _x000D_ Currently, Lance does “all things whenever” for Cape House. He's framed, floored, and shiplap-installed during the build out, and when the store opens, he'll manage and execute the vision and day-to-day operations of Cape House, creating an overall experience that compliments a beautiful aesthetic design._x000D_

    ON CAPE HOUSE…

_x000D_ What’s your vision for Cape House?_x000D_ "That we continue to develop and grow a lifestyle brand that will impact lives long after we are gone. It’s about a legacy - a business that becomes a part of people’s lives. In 5 years, I see Cape House located in multiple markets - our presence reflecting an investment in the community and people who are living life to the fullest with the people who matter most. In 10, I see the Cape House brand as a frontrunner in the home decor and hospitality industry, known for how much we care about the communities we are invested in. My prayer is that we will hear lives changed for eternity because of the encounters they have with Cape House."_x000D_
