(Even though it's felt like it for weeks now) Summer is here! School is out. The days are getting longer. And we're ready for all the porch time we can get!
Last month,
we introduced you to Supper Club: a monthly get-together where we take respite around the table from the usual hustle and pour into the meaningful relationships that make life great. This month, we celebrated the start to Summer. Sometimes in Supper Club, we experiment with new and intricate recipes. Other times, like this month, we stick to classics. There's something about Summertime that is so exciting and familiar to us (maybe it's that whole living at the beach thing...). Regardless, there are certain recipes that just feel like home, and in this busy season, that's exactly what we needed.
The Menu // We started by snacking on watermelon salad and boiled peanuts. Don't even get us started on how much we love this oh-so-salty, briny snack that is incredibly easy to make, especially if you use your slow cooker like we did. The main event: a classic Lowcountry Boil. We grew up eating this seasoned seafood boil of corn, red potatoes, smoked sausage, and shrimp (we used the local Mayport shrimp) - and to add a special touch, we added crab legs. Dessert was bright and citrus-y: lemon cheesecake mousse. Try the recipes for yourself:
BOILED PEANUTS // Hot Southern Boiled Peanuts by Add a Pinch
WATERMELON SALAD // Watermelon, Cucumber, & Feta Salad from Cinnamon, Spice, & Everything Nice
LOWCOUNTRY BOIL // We used a family recipe, but it's similar to Noble Pig's version.
LEMON CHEESECAKE MOUSSE // Lemon Cheesecake Mousse by Cooking Classy
The Decor // Lowcountry Boil is traditionally served splayed out over newspaper. So, we skipped the tablecloth and runner - and opted instead for inexpensive kraft paper and newsprint. Wooden square plates offered plenty of surface area for the seafood feast - as did the butcher towels that we tied in a simple knot as napkin. We found the
crab crackers and forks,
butter warmers, and the plastic
crab bibs (a totally hilarious necessity) on Amazon - and the rest, we already owned. We love how classic it all turned out.
This laid-back evening allowed us to relax, catch up, and most importantly - laugh! And that's what the heart of Supper Club is all about. What meal screams Summer to you? Tell us below.
