Behind The Design: A Quick Guide For Hanging Art
If you've ever visited our store you know that we're big art people. Art is essential to a well designed home and it's one of our favorite products to source! We've adorned the walls of Cape House with carefully selected pieces but we also have access to thousands of gorgeous works from around the world! We've curated a beautiful digital collection of Cape House favorites for you to choose from. We'd be thrilled to walk you through our digital library to help you select the perfect piece for your space. We know that art is deeply personal, so we've pieced together a collection that includes everything from coastal sketches to botanical abstracts. A little something for everyone. Our "favorites" gallery is always growing! In her downtime, you can typically find our designer, McKenzie perusing the digital gallery for new additions!
Once you've found the perfect piece, it's time for the real fun! ;) We know that hanging art is not everyone's forte so we've created a little guide to help you get you started! While there are definitely "rules", sometimes they must be broken! So let this serve as a starting point for you!
Below are our best tips & tricks for proper art placement!
SCENARIO #1: ABOVE A SOFA
When hanging artwork above a sofa, we recommend 8-10 inches distance from the bottom of the art to the top of the sofa. We also recommend your art take up more than 1/3 the space of the sofa! The space above a sofa is also a great canvas for a gallery wall or large grid!
SCENARIO #2: ABOVE FURNITURE
For a cohesive feel, artwork displayed above furniture such as buffets, consoles, dressers and sideboards should be hung 6-8 inches above the furniture. If artwork is hung too high it will feel disconnected from the space, as if it's floating.
SCENARIO #3: ON AN EMPTY WALL
If you're hanging artwork on an empty wall, we recommend that you hang it approximately 57-60" from the floor to the center of your artwork. It should be eye level for an average height woman. If you and your spouse are in disagreement about the proper height, feel free to use this post as a tie-breaker! ;)
We hope you find these tips helpful when it comes time to hang your artwork! And if you choose to avoid any headache and have your art hung by a professional, feel free to reach out for our recommendations!
